Free HPI Check UK: What You Really Get (and What You Don’t)

A free HPI check can tell you a surprising amount about a car, but not everything. Here's what you get for free, what you don't, and when it's worth upgrading.

Everyone loves a freebie, and a free HPI check is one of the most useful ones out there. In a few seconds, and without spending a penny, you can find out whether the car in front of you is what the seller says it is.

But “free HPI check” means different things on different websites, and it’s easy to come away thinking you’re fully protected when you’re not. Let’s clear it up.

What does a free HPI check show?

A free car check uses information that’s publicly available, mostly from the DVLA and the MOT testing service. Typically, you’ll see:

  • Make and model
  • Colour
  • Year of manufacture and date of first registration
  • Engine size and fuel type
  • MOT status and expiry date
  • Tax status and expiry date
  • CO2 emissions, which affect road tax on many cars

Some free checks also show MOT history, including past test results, advisories and recorded mileage.

Why a free check is still worth doing

It might sound basic, but this information catches a lot of problems early:

  • Mismatched details. If the advert says “blue 2.0 diesel” and the check says “silver 1.6 petrol”, something’s wrong. It could be a cloned car using another vehicle’s plates.
  • No MOT. A car without a valid MOT can’t legally be driven on the road, except to a pre-booked MOT test.
  • Untaxed cars. Tax doesn’t transfer with the car, but an untaxed car on a driveway is still worth asking about.
  • Mileage that doesn’t add up. If MOT history is included, a reading that goes down between tests is a big red flag.

In other words, a free check is a brilliant filter. It helps you avoid wasting a trip on a car that was never right in the first place.

What a free HPI check can’t tell you

Here’s the important bit. A free check can’t access the private databases that hold the most expensive problems:

Check Free check Full HPI check
Make, model, colour, engine Yes Yes
MOT and tax status Yes Yes
Outstanding finance No Yes
Police stolen records No Yes
Insurance write-off (Cat A, B, S, N) No Yes
Plate change history No Yes, on most full checks
Number of previous keepers No Yes, on most full checks

That data is held by finance companies, insurers and the police, and it costs money to access. So any website that offers a genuinely “free full HPI check” is either giving you the basics with a fancy name, or asking you to pay at the end.

The real risks a free check won’t catch

These are the problems that cost buyers thousands of pounds every year:

  • Outstanding finance: the lender may still have a claim on the car. Our guide to buying a car with outstanding finance explains what can happen.
  • Stolen cars: the police can take the car back, and you may not get your money back.
  • Hidden write-offs: a repaired Cat S or Cat N car can look perfect, but it’s worth less. See write-off categories explained.

How to do a free HPI check

  1. Find the car’s registration number on the advert or the number plate.
  2. Enter it into the free check box on this page.
  3. Compare the results with the advert and, when you see the car, with the V5C logbook.
  4. If everything matches and you’re still interested, unlock the full check before you hand over any money.

You can also look up MOT history on GOV.UK and tax status on the DVLA vehicle enquiry service yourself.

Free first, full when it matters

CheckHPI’s free check shows the vehicle, MOT and tax details for any UK registration. When you’re ready, the full HPI check adds finance, stolen and write-off records from £9.99.

So, is a free HPI check enough?

For browsing, yes. For buying, no. Use the free check to narrow down your shortlist and spot obvious problems. Then, once you’ve found the car you want, spend a few pounds on a full check. Compared to the cost of losing a car to a finance company or the police, it’s the cheapest insurance you’ll ever buy.
