Common questions
What does HPI stand for?
HPI originally stood for Hire Purchase Information. These days most people use "HPI check" to mean any full vehicle history check.
What's included in a CheckHPI HPI check?
Every check includes free vehicle details, MOT and tax status. Paid checks add outstanding finance, stolen and write-off checks (Standard), then mileage history, plate changes and keeper count (Premium), then a valuation and data guarantee (Ultimate).
How much does an HPI check cost?
£9.99 for Standard, £14.99 for Premium and £19.99 for Ultimate. It's a one-off payment per car.
How long does it take?
About a minute. Free details appear in seconds and your full report appears as soon as you've paid.
Do I need an account?
No. Just enter the reg and, if you unlock the full check, an email address so we can send you a copy.
Can I check HPI for free?
You can get the basics free, here or on GOV.UK. Finance, theft and write-off records aren't freely available, which is why a full HPI check costs a few pounds.
What should I do if my check shows outstanding finance?
Don't pay anything yet. Ask the seller to settle the finance and show you written confirmation from the lender, then re-check. Our guide on outstanding car finance explains more.
Should I buy a Cat S or Cat N car?
It can be a good way to save money, as long as the price reflects it, the repairs were done properly and your insurer is happy. Read write-off categories explained.
How do I know the mileage is genuine?
Our Premium check looks for drops and oddities in the recorded mileage. Pair it with the service history and a careful look at wear and tear. See how to spot a clocked car.
Does a clear HPI check mean the car is in good condition?
Not on its own. An HPI check covers the car's recorded history, not its mechanical condition. Always test drive, check the service history and consider an independent inspection.
How do I get my report?
It appears on screen straight away, we email it to you, and you can download it as a PDF to share with the seller.
Is CheckHPI linked to HPI Limited?
No. CheckHPI is an independent service. We use "HPI check" in the way most people do, to describe a vehicle history check.
