A full HPI check is the gold standard for used car buyers. It pulls together records from the DVLA, the police, finance companies and insurers to give you a complete picture of a car’s recorded history.
But what exactly is in it? Here’s every section explained, so you can read your report with confidence.
What is a full HPI check?
A full HPI check is a vehicle history report that goes beyond the free basics. Where a free check only shows things like make, model and MOT status, a full check adds the private data that reveals expensive hidden problems.
If you’re new to car checks, our plain-English guide to HPI checks is a good place to start.
What’s included in a full HPI check?
1. Outstanding finance
This shows whether there’s a hire purchase, conditional sale or PCP agreement still recorded against the car. If there is, the lender may still have a claim on it. It’s one of the most important sections, and one free checks can’t provide.
2. Stolen vehicle check
This checks police records to see if the car has been reported stolen. A stolen car can be recovered by the police, and you could lose what you paid.
3. Insurance write-off
This shows whether an insurer has ever declared the car a write-off and, if so, in which category:
- Cat A: scrap only, must be crushed
- Cat B: body must be crushed, but some parts can be salvaged
- Cat S: structural damage, repairable and can return to the road
- Cat N: non-structural damage, repairable and can return to the road
Read write-off categories explained for the full story.
4. Mileage history
A mileage check compares recorded odometer readings from sources such as MOT tests and previous checks. If a reading is lower than an earlier one, the car may have been clocked. Our guide on reading MOT history shows how to spot this yourself.
5. Plate change history
This reveals any previous registration numbers. Plate changes are often innocent, like a private number plate, but they can also be used to hide a car’s past. A full check links the records together.
6. Number of previous keepers
How many registered keepers the car has had. Lots of owners in a short time can be a sign of a problem car that people keep passing on.
7. Vehicle identity details
Make, model, colour, engine size, fuel type, year and date of first registration. These should match the car, the advert and the V5C logbook exactly.
8. MOT and tax status
Whether the car has a valid MOT and is currently taxed, plus the expiry dates.
9. Valuation (on some checks)
Some full checks include a market valuation, so you know whether the asking price is fair before you start negotiating.

When do you need a full HPI check?
You need one whenever you’re about to spend real money on a used car. In particular:
- Private sales: you have less legal protection than when buying from a dealer.
- Online and auction purchases: you may not see the car in person before paying.
- Cars that seem cheap for their age and mileage: there may be a reason.
- Any time you’re paying a deposit: check before you hand over any money.
How to read a full HPI check report
- Start with the summary to see if anything has been flagged.
- Check the vehicle details match the car and the V5C, including the VIN.
- Read each section in full, even the ones marked clear.
- Note anything unusual, like a recent plate change or a mileage gap, and ask the seller about it.
- Keep a copy of the report as a record of what you knew when you bought.
CheckHPI’s Standard check covers finance, stolen and write-off records. Premium adds mileage, plate changes and keepers, and Ultimate adds a valuation, vehicle image and data guarantee.
What a full HPI check can’t tell you
Even the most complete check only covers recorded history. It can’t tell you about the car’s mechanical condition, the quality of past repairs or how it’s been driven. Always combine it with a thorough inspection, a test drive and a look through the service history. Our used car checklist covers the lot.
The bottom line
A full HPI check is the most thorough way to protect yourself when buying a used car. It covers the problems you can’t see, from outstanding finance to hidden write-offs, and costs a tiny fraction of the car’s price. If you’re serious about a car, it’s the one check you shouldn’t skip.
Frequently asked questions
What does a full HPI check include?
A full HPI check usually includes outstanding finance, stolen vehicle, insurance write-off, mileage history, plate changes, number of keepers, vehicle details, and MOT and tax status. Some also include a valuation.
How long does a full HPI check take?
Results are usually instant. You enter the registration number, choose your check and get the report within seconds.
Is a full HPI check worth it?
Yes. For around £10 to £20, it can reveal outstanding finance, stolen status or a hidden write-off, any of which could cost you thousands.
Does a full HPI check include service history?
No. Service history is kept by the owner and garages, not on central databases. Ask the seller for the service book and receipts.
